Day of the dead preparations

Writer: Humberto RomeroHumberto Romero

While day of the dead traditions are not as strong here in Zihuatanejo as they are in other parts of Mexico, it is still something that is observed by many and as with any popular holiday the merchants take full advantage of the opportunity to sell their wares. The market area of Zihuatanejo closes off 2-3 blocks of streets to allow vendors to set up stands. Primarily they sell flowers and flower arrangements to adorn gravesites but there are quite a few other items as well. There is "Pan de Muerto" (Bread of the dead), skulls, religious iconography and sweets sold only on these special occasions.
